08/01...BC Cup Day continues to deliver the message...

The creative horsemen that came up with the idea to showcase the best Thoroughbreds bred in British Columbia on the BC Day holiday Monday should be saluted for their foresight. BC Cup Day has become a tradition in the city and this year's large, exhuberant crowd underlined the success the event continues to achieve. Year after year, the slumping industry gets a chance to inhale a deep breath of fresh air filled with fond memories of days past and guarded optimism for racing's future in the province. 2011 proved no exception, as local horsemen did their best to fill the entry box and the fans responded by filling the grandstand, once again proclaiming BC Cup Day as the season's greatest day of racing.

08/01...Classic win for a B.C. Champion...

Almost Time

The most predictable winner on the BC Day card was Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. 2010 champion older horse and sprinter Almost Time (Finality). Bred by Suzanne Anderson and D. Deyagher, this versatile and consistent gelding rewarded the large crowd with another stellar performance, rallying safely wide from well back avoiding any chance of contact with the tiring pacesetters infront of him and charging to draw clear in the stretch., winning the $50,000 BC Cup Redekop Classic as much the best for trainer Dino Condilenios and regular rider Frank Fuentes. Aurora Stables' 10-year-old former B.C. horse of the year and veteran sale graduate Trick of the North (Western Trick) ran on late to take the place in a picture from Lotti Ann Kerr, Three of Diamonds and R and J Thoroughbreds' longshot Victor's Magic (Vying Victor). Almost Time, who won the Sprint Handicap in 2010, underlining his versatility, took 1:50.82 to get the nine furlongs and had a 2 1/2 length advantage at the wire while returning a meagre $4.00 as the day's most popular winner. Nick and Pauline's all-time leading BC-bred Spaghetti Mouse (Archers Bay), the fan's sentimental favourite, was once again used early in the race, chasing longshot sprinter Lornefivehundred (Flaming West) before attacking that one prematurely and suffering through the stretch to finish last in the eight-horse field. Almost Time is the fifth of seven foals and only stakes winner from his stakes-placed dam Vainglorius, a daughter of California sire Cutlass Reality, and now has an impressive lifetime record of 21 starts, with nine victories, five seconds, two thirds and earnings closing in on $400,000. Look for this classic winner to surface in the prestigious Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs, a world-class race in which Almost Time finished a credible fourth last year, after breaking slowly and making up considerable ground.

08/01...Stellar Jay turned upside down...

After a lengthy decision by the stewards, George Robbins' homebred sophmore Herbie D (Orchid's Devil) was placed first in the $50,000 BC Cup Stellar's Jay Hanciap after allegedly being interfered with by Maryanne and Harlow Burlows and Wayne Oliver's race-favourite and apparent convincing 2 3/4 length winner Jump Up Andkissme (Finality) who was placed second after the infraction. Roy and Dixie Jacobson's early pacesetter Stormy Canuck (Regal Intention) couldn't finish with the top pair and was another 1/2 length back in third spot. Making only his second start since breaking his maiden in June of the current season and his first at the 8.5 furlong distance, the winner is trained by Rob Gilker and was ridden by Pedro Alvarado. Herbie D is out of the unplaced mare Chilli Chines, a half-sister to SP Boiling Point and SP Path to Victory. Going off at odds of 6/1, the official winner paid a decent $14.50 to win and was given the final time of 1:44.85 for his efforts.

08/01...Dogwood comes up roses for well-bred longshot...

La Belle Rose

Fresh off a maiden win at the same distance, Corsair Holdings' three-year-old filly La Belle Rose (Vying Victor) proved what a sharp claim she was when taken for $7,500 out of her first start at Emerald Downs last year. With a year to mature and a distance she relishes, the well-bred miss is now a stakes winner after scoring an impressive 1/2 length win in the 8.5 furlong $50,000 BC Cup Dogwood Handicap. La Belle Rose was bred by E.M. Braithwaite, M.A. Braithwaite and I. M. Gorasht. Ridden by Keveh Nicholls for trainer William La Vanway, the roan filly stalked the pace for the first half mile before moving three-wide to take the lead and hold off Bryan and Carol Anderson and Jim Eccott's late closing Camino (Katahaula County), who finished 1 1/4 lengths infront of Doug Clyde's 2010 champion juvenile filly Victory With Class (Storm Victory). Breaking her maiden in the black-type event, Sunnyside Gal became the first winner for her sire Sungold, a winning son of A.P. Indy, whose first foals are two-year-olds of 2011.

08/01...Debutante runs away from her field...

Sunnyside Gal

Sunnyside Gal
(Sungold), a 2010 CTHS sale grad bred and sold by Red Rock Farm and now racing for NAT2010LLP ran away to an eight length victory in the $50,000 BC Cup Debutante Stakes for two-year-old fillies. The winner was saddled by Troy Taylor and ridden by Mario Gutierrez for the team's second consecutive BC Cup Day score. Rallying late to win the place photo was Mike Anderson and Terry Clyde's recent maiden winner Undo It (Storm Victory), another sale grad, who finished a neck infront of James Redekop's race favourite Gabigotherway (Quiet Cash). Sunnyside Gal completed the 6.5 furlongs in 1:18.28 and paid $6.20.

08/01...Mild upset in Distaff...

Dashing Daisy

Glen Todd and Peter Tom's
astute $25,000 claim Dashing Daisy (Mass Market), bred by Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds and stepping up off of a recent claiming victory, drew off to a 3 1/4 length win in the $50,000 BC Cup Distaff Handicap when Dennis Spence's favourite and past sale grad Wando Woman (Wando), failed to start with her field and was forced to make a belated late run that could only earn her second money in the 9 furlong event for older fillies and mares. Troy Taylor was the winning conditioner and the rider was Mario Gutierrez. Finishing third, a length back of Wando Woman in the six horse field was RJT Thoroughbred's multiple stakes winner and last year's BC Cup Dogwood heroine Dearest Princess (Stephanotis). Dashing Daisy got the distance in 1:51.06 and returned $8.70 to her backers.

08/01...Homebred sprints to big win...

Don'twaitforme

Barry and Henrica Tyrer's
talented homebred Don'twaitforme (Vying Victor), rallied wide in a strong effort to wear down Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella's 2009 sale purchase and favourite Cherokee Notion (Black Minnaloushe) in the final strides to capture the $50,000 BC Cup Sprint Handicap. Todd and Kinsella's second starter Prince Intent (Regal Intention), finished a length back in third, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of the only other starter Sense of Humor (Terrell). Don'twaitforme is trained by veteran horsemen Rob VanOverschot who gave a leg-up to jockey Amadeo Perez. The 6.5 furlongs went in 1:16.81 and the winner returned a $6.40 mutuel. The Sprint was the second win in as many starts this season for the lightly raced four-year-old, who won the Richmond Derby Trial last season before being sidelined and has now finished first or second in all of his seven starts. Don'twaitforme is the second foal to race out of the winning mare Fancy Woman, a daughter of Metfield. Coincidently, the mare's first foal, Lady Sasha (Wandering) would later take the $22,000 BC Cup Starter Handicap on the holiday card for the same connections. The second and third finishers in the Sprint were both purchased from the September Sale.

08/01...BC Cup Day opens with a sale grad exacta...

Herescomelucky

Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella's
undefeated two-year-old sensation Herescomelucky (Katahaula County), bred in B.C. and sold by Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds as agent in the 2010 CTHS Sale, made a procession out of the $50,000 BC Cup Nursery Stakes infront of an exhuberant holiday crowd to launch Hastings' most exciting day of racing. Herescomelucky was ridden by Mario Gutierrez for conditioner Elizabeth Stolzenburg. Sharp at the break, the winner joined Encore Stable's eventual runner-up Joint Choice (Stephanotis) from the outside and shared the lead until entering the stretch where he drew off with ease, winning by a comfortable five lengths. 2010 sale grad Joint Choice held the place by a length over Dr. Lois Philp's late closing maiden Simon Templar (Tempered Appeal). Now three for three including two stakes wins, Herescomelucky covered the 6.5 furlongs in 1:18.91 over a strip warmed by sunny summer skies and returned a paltry $2.70 to his large following. Herescomelucky is out of the winning mare Ministers' Dream and is a full brother to SW Country Kat and a half-brother to SW Mister Mane Man and SW Margo Duke.
