Perennial CTHS sale advocates Nick and Pauline Felicella, stepped up to the plate once again and for the fourth time in the last seven years, hit another one out of the park when Pauline closed out the bidding at $89,000 on Hip #29, a grand looking Ontario-foaled filly by champion sprinter Cherokee Run with a regal bottom-line. Consigned by agent Nina Ferguson on behalf of  Bill and Susan Stewart’s Black Canyon Thoroughbreds, the sale-topper is out of Sweet Windsong, a half-sister to no less than four major stakes horses including SW Brattothecore, SW Sweet Monarch, SP Prodigious and SP Out of Africa.

The amiable couple's six yearling purchases, adding up to a sale-leading $287,000, also included the second high-price of the sale, $64,000, paid for Hip #67, a colt by Rosberg, a promising young stakes winning son of A.P. Indy, out of SW Early Blaze, the dam of SW Early Wisdom, SP Mountain Dawn and SP Gregson. The handsome individual hailed from the barn of leading consignor Tod Mtn. Thoroughbreds.

With less horses cataloged and the quality of the consignments impressive, the sale made some significant increases in several categories, setting a high mark for the sales average.

In all, 79 horses and one stallion share exchanged hands, grossing $1,080,400, reflecting a slight bump in the total from last season when 87 lots reached a gross of  $1,031,400. This year’s sale average of $13,505 was up significantly compared to last year’s average of $11,855. It was apparent that the high-end of the sale was where the action was.

The record-setting average yearling price took a giant leap this year, with 70 being purchased for $1,063,800 compared to 2010 when 83 yearlings brought $1,026,900. The average yearling this year skyrocketed to $15,197 up substantially from $12,372 in 2010. This year’s yearling median leaped to $7,500 from $6,000 last year.

Three of the four weanlings consigned were sold, with a Cape Canaveral colt bringing $1,600. Six broodmares brought a total of $11,200. The top being 16-year-old Icecapade Star, a daughter of Wander Kind that has produced SW Mr Exspeedient and is now in-foal to Finality. The mare went to Ron Bacon for $4,500.

A share in the promising young stallion Quiet Cash sold for $1,000.
