BC Breeders' Banter by Dave Pihl

We have decided at this time to send out regular updates on what we are attempting to do and have been working on for CTHS BC over the past months of 2025 and into 2026.

Starting from the beginning of 2026 we were waiting for BC Breeders money. It finally arrived in April with a shortfall of approximately $174,000.00. Ole Nielsen from BCTOBA is still trying to recover this money from Great Canadian.

With the BC Government deciding to withhold all betting revenues from the Industry, CTHS BC along with CTHS Alberta and WEG put together a MOU to release funds currently being held from Teletheatre revenues so that CTHS BC could pay bonus money to BC-breds competing in other tracks across the country. We required the co-operation of HRBC and HBPA. Unfortunately, it was not forthcoming.

As you all know the Standardbreds are working toward racing in Osoyoos this fall. Kelly MacMillan reached out to all of the Thoroughbred organizations (CTHS BC, BCTOBA and HPBA) with a proposal in March. CTHS BC responded positively to this offer and sent a letter to BCTOBA and HPBA. Requesting their support. This also was rejected. BCTOBA and HPBA refused to sign off and that opportunity was lost. Link to view letters.

David Pihl and Mary-Jean Bennett have recently returned from CTHS meetings in Toronto. We met with the National and Provincial boards on next steps as we continue to look for funding for BC-breds. Our goal is to try and keep the Thoroughbred breeding industry alive in BC. during these difficult times such that if racing were in the future to return to B.C. we the breeders would be in a position to supply horses.

We will update you regularly as we find out more information. We welcome any feedback or suggestions.

Not Bourbon (Not Impossible – Bourbon Belle) passed away on December 28, 2025, at the age of 20. Bred and owned by Charles Fipke and trained by Roger Attfield, Not Bourbon was an exceptional racehorse whose accomplishments earned him a place in Canadian racing history. During his career on the track, Not Bourbon captured some of the nation’s most prestigious races, including the Queen’s Plate, Plate Trial, Queenston Stakes, and Overskate Stakes. As a two-year-old, he showed early promise by winning the Bull Page Stakes and setting a track record for six furlongs at Woodbine. Over the course of three racing seasons, Not Bourbon earned more than one million dollars, and his outstanding three-year-old campaign was recognized with a Sovereign Award. Retired to stud, Not Bourbon went on to become a champion sire in Ontario, further cementing his legacy in the breeding shed. In 2020, he relocated to British Columbia, standing his first season at Emerald Acres in Aldergrove, before moving to Flying Horse Farm in West Kelowna, where he continued to make a meaningful contribution to the provincial breeding industry. Not Bourbon will be remembered for his talent as a racehorse and his contributions to breeding in both Ontario and British Columbia.
