2025 CTHS Sale

Notices to Consignors
Our general manager has contacted all the known active market breeders to try and estimate the number of entries that could be expected should a “yearling sale” be organized for this fall. The count based on the information received was 12-14. Our Board members believe, based on past sale financial experience, that a sale with such few entries would be very uneconomical.
CTHS National in the June AGM meetings, being held in Edmonton, will discuss the potential for a nationwide digital sale to be held in the fall. This topic came up as other provinces are experiencing low breeder product counts as well. We cannot say such a sale would take place, but the potential is there for discussion.
Some CTHSBC breeders have indicated they will be sending their yearlings to the CTHS Alberta sale being held on September 19th. If this is a consideration for you, please keep in mind the deadline for entries for the Alberta sale is June 9th. Dawson Guhle, the general manager of CTHS Alberta division can be reached at [email protected]. He will be happy to assist you on any questions you may have. Other CTHS sales in other provinces may be a consideration for you as well. The CTHS Manitoba division sale will be held on August 24th and the end date for entry is May 30th. The sale date for the CTHS Ontario sale is August 27th and entry must be submitted by June 2nd .
A question has been raised about the possibility of financial assistance should a B.C. breeder wish to send their yearling(s) to an out of province sale. In the past, British Columbia consignors located outside the lower mainland have incurred travel, and accommodation expense to participate in the CTHSBC sale held at Thunderbird or other venues in the lower mainland and no subsidies were provided. This situation will continue going forward, in other words, financial assistance will not be available.
As you are no doubt aware, many of our breeders have, due to the uncertainty of the future of racing in B.C., either left the industry or decided for the foreseeable future not to breed. CTHSBC is participating with TOBA and HPBA, working with gov’t in trying to re-vitalize the racing industry. Depending on the results of the combined effort in that regard, the current situation may be temporary. We try to remain positive in that regard.
We will take steps to keep our members up to date on any news about the industry so you can continue to make decisions that are best for you.
Thank you

posted May 10, 2025
Since our above posting of May 10, we have been advised that BCTOBA and HPBA of BC via Mike Heads and Gary Johnson along with Jim Alendal (breeder) are attempting to organize a “bare bones” sale on September 03, 2025 in the paddock at Hastings. We understand this sale, while the details are still being worked on will, be a no commission sale. It will, if it happens, make use of handlers at Hastings to assist in an effort to keep costs down. The sale entries will be eligible for the sale stakes (nomination payments will as usual be required). There will be a ONE-TIME only payment of $200.00 per horse as a ship in incentive for this sale.
CTHSBC is supportive of this initiative and will co-operate in any way possible to ensure it is successful. The organizers feel this live sale will be more successful than a digital sale
In the short term, representatives from BCTOBA and HPBA of BC will be reaching out to the breeders to determine if there is enough interest with commitments to enter the sale in order to know if there it will be possible to proceed with their sale.
This e-mail is being circulated at the request of those attempting to stir up interest to support such a sale and CTHSBC wishes them success in this attempt.
Breeders interested in participating in this sale can contact Jim Alendal at [email protected] or (604) 792-0848 landline or
