On Saturday June 2 long time breeders and owners, Mr. And Mrs. R.J. Bennett scored a rare back to back double with two BC home-bred geldings. Thanks to their team of trainer Barbara Heads and jockey Antonio Reyes both Sunset Drive and Lucky Ending came home winners. In the fourth race it seems Sunset Drive got the distance he was looking for in a one and one sixteenth miles Allowance race for non winners of three (BC-bred), and rider Antonio Reyes timed his come from behind run just right, winning by a short head over Kentucky-bred Spring in Alberta. The 5-year-old bay gelding, Sunset Drive is by the Bennett's sire Sungold out of the mare Perfect Unbridal, by Perfect Soul.

In the very next race it was deja vu all over again, as the same connections sent out winner, Lucky Ending in a Maiden Special Weight for 3-year -olds and up, going one and one sixteenth miles. Again jockey Antonio Reyes brought his mount from off the pace to win, but handily this time, by 2 3/4 lengths over Kentucky-bred Chef. Lucky Ending is a dark bay or brown gelding by another Bennett stallion, Finality, out of the Alphabet Soup mare Wish Me Luck. It seems trainer Barb Heads has her charges fit for the longer distances and this terrific team may have more to show in the future. Look out!

Not Bourbon (Not Impossible – Bourbon Belle) passed away on December 28, 2025, at the age of 20. Bred and owned by Charles Fipke and trained by Roger Attfield, Not Bourbon was an exceptional racehorse whose accomplishments earned him a place in Canadian racing history. During his career on the track, Not Bourbon captured some of the nation’s most prestigious races, including the Queen’s Plate, Plate Trial, Queenston Stakes, and Overskate Stakes. As a two-year-old, he showed early promise by winning the Bull Page Stakes and setting a track record for six furlongs at Woodbine. Over the course of three racing seasons, Not Bourbon earned more than one million dollars, and his outstanding three-year-old campaign was recognized with a Sovereign Award. Retired to stud, Not Bourbon went on to become a champion sire in Ontario, further cementing his legacy in the breeding shed. In 2020, he relocated to British Columbia, standing his first season at Emerald Acres in Aldergrove, before moving to Flying Horse Farm in West Kelowna, where he continued to make a meaningful contribution to the provincial breeding industry. Not Bourbon will be remembered for his talent as a racehorse and his contributions to breeding in both Ontario and British Columbia.
