HERE'S HANNAH ROLLS ON

by Mark Johnson

The BC Cup Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap, with a purse of $50,000, for 3-year-old fillies was the 3rd race of BC Cup day, they were traveling 1 1/16 miles. The sensational BC-bred filly, Here's Hannah made short work of the short field of five, dragging her mount, Richard Hamel quickly to the front and never looking back, winning in the good time of 1:44.51. That gives her six wins from seven starts, impressive. This fine filly by the A. P. Indy sire, Numaany, and out of Dreams Start Here is trained by John Morrison and owned by B C Stables and Paul Caravetta, she was bred in BC by B. C. Stables. In addition to the stakes money, this homebred also delivers a $25,000 bonus for being a BC-bred BC Cup stakes winner to the owners. Dreams Star Here has also produced the tough stakes placed mare Marcado.

NOTIS THE JEWELL RUNS THEM DOWN

by Mark Johnson

The 4th race, the BC Cup Distaff Handicap, at 1 1/16, for fillies and mares 3 -year-old and up was contested by seven capable older ladies. BC-bred Notis the Jewel was reunited with jockey Richard Hamel and the result was a much-improved performance by the 6-year-old mare, who is trained by Larry Fielding. She was kept patiently near the back of the field and watched as Kentucky-bred Good Luck to You made a big move to strike the front on the far turn while Notis the Jewel made her move a few moments later and rolled by most by the beginning of the stretch, and Good Luck to You in the lane, winning by a growing 3 lengths. Notis the Jewel is owned by Mark Fielding, Larry Fielding, Cherie Moryson and Chris Derose and was bred in BC by Len Fielding. This homebred mare delivers a $25,000 owners’ bonus for winning a stakes race on BC Cup day . Notis the Jewell Notis the Jewel is by Stephanotis and out of the stakes placed mare, Diamond Berries. She'll be worth keeping an eye on, as the past has shown when this mare gets going good, she often stays that way.

DANCIN SHOES TWOSTEPS TO VICTORY

by Mark Johnson

The BC Cup Debutante went as the 5th at Hastings, carded for 2-year-old fillies going 6 1/2 furlongs, turning left, as usual. It was won, in impressive fashion, by first-time starter and longest shot on the board, Dancin Shoes . The gray or roan filly looked very professional as she was placed perfectly in behind the leaders who set some fast tractions, until the far turn where jockey Antonio Reyes guided her to the outside and the real running began. Dancin Shoes finished strongly and her pursers took their best shot but her nearest rival was 4 lengths back at the wire, she went in the quick time of 1:17.89. The BC-bred Dancin Shoes is by young Kentucky sire Cross Traffic (Unbridled's Song) and out of the Gone West mare, Andtheliviniseasy. This filly was bred and is owned by Mr. And Mrs. David Pihl, she was trained to stakes triumph, in her first start, by Barbara Heads. Besides the stakes money, this homebred also delivers $25,000 for being a BC-bred BC Cup stakes winner and $10,000 worth of owner/breeder bonuses to her connections . Sweet. Andtheliviniseasy has also produced stakes placed winner Rockport Dancer. Dancin Shoes paid over $80 for a $2 win ticket, that will never happen again, after this outstanding debut.

LUCKY ENDING NEEDS NO LUCK JUST DISTANCE

by Mark Johnson

The 6th race was a 1 3/8 marathon handicap test for BC-breds, 3-years-old and upwards. The race was won by Lucky Ending who ran as lucky number 12, which you don't often see at Hastings Racecourse. He left the gate as favourite, apparently deservedly so as he ran away from the field in the end, winning easily by 5 3/4 lengths under the gentle urging of pilot Antonio Reyes who was having an exceptional BC Cup day. Lucky Ending is a homebred, owned by longtime Vancouver thoroughbred breeders/owners, Mr. & Mrs. R. J. Bennett. He is out of the Alphabet Soup mare, Wish Me Luck. It appears these longer distances are to his liking.

MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT RACES - BC CUP DAY

The Chances R Very Good

by Mark Johnson

In the 1st race, a Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-olds and upward going 6 1/2 furlongs, the battle may have been over before it even began. Although that is not something a person should ever say when it comes to a horse race. In this case the match was won by odds on favourite The Chances R by 5 1/2 widening lengths. Rider Miguel Rodriguez kept his 3-year-old gray or roan gelding to task even after looking back at the far turn looking for competition, and not seeing any. . He was trained to victory by Mel Snow and is owned by the trainer and Conrad Rozenek. He was bred by Mel Snow and Fran Snow in Langley, BC and is product of broodmare What R the Odds and local sire Cause to Believe. What R the Odds has been a reliable producer of quality runners, including a full brother to this sophomore, The Odds R Good who has.made over $120,000. The Chances R rewarded his connections faith in him on his 12th effort to break his maiden. It includes a $5,000 bonus to both the owners and the breeders .

BC-bred Dorys Darlin Arrives Home

by Mark Johnson

The 2nd race was a Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-olds and upward for the kinder gender, fillies and mares, running 6 1/2 furlongs over the fast track at Hastings. Dorys Darlin ran a reserved race behind the early speed before easily moving past her competitors under confident handling by her pilot Antonio Reyes. She won by 1 length, in a time of 1:18.30, holding first time starter, Kentucky bred, Trooper Jenny at bay. Dorys Darlin is trained by Pat Jarvis, she is owned and was bred in BC by her trainer and Blue Willow Dairy Ltd. This means both $5,000 bonuses go their way . Dorys Darlin momma, Broken Hearted has also produced the full sister, Our Bonita Rose, who is a stakes-placed winner. It's likely this young 3-year-old miss by BC sire Storm Victory may be headed to test stakes company in the near future.

What better way to launch the 2023 thoroughbred racing season at Hastings Racecourse than to stage a full-blown dinner party just prior to opening day? First race to launch the 2023 schedule at Hastings is set for 2 p.m., Sunday, April 30. Four nights earlier – Wednesday, April 26 – the industry celebrates its 2022 BC Thoroughbred Awards Dinner and Hall of Fame Inductions at the Italian Cultural Centre. Horses from 16 categories will be acknowledged for their performances at Hastings last year. Co-ordinator Minna Rytkonen issued secret ballots to a panel of selectors in December. The winners will be revealed by emcees Dan Jukich and Mike Heads highlighting the April 26 event. Season-ending stats following last year’s 45-day racing calendar confirmed the 2022 leading breeder (Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds), owner (Rob and Sheena Maybin), trainer (Edgar Mendoza) and jockey (Amadeo Perez) awards. BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame 2022 inductees, announced earlier by curator Randy Goulding, are Dr. Ed Wiebe (builder), Richard Hamel (jockey) and Robbie Anderson (trainer). “After a two-year interruption staging the Awards Dinner due to the pandemic, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone again as a kick-off to the 2023 racing season,” says B-J Davidson, CTHS-BC Regional General Manager. “We consider it a huge family gathering.”

Standardbred Canada (SC) and the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) are pleased to announce the development of a National Economic Impact Study. The two organizations are working with Serecon, a third-party research company, to conduct an economic scan and facilitate key stakeholder interviews through a national survey and provide further analysis. The goals of the project are: To increase the understanding of the current state of the sector; To identify and articulate the economic and social impacts of horse racing across the country; To develop strategic recommendations to ensure the sustainability and inclusivity of the horse racing sector; Socialize findings with key federal government stakeholders The study will review such economic drivers as cost of ownership, economic contribution from horses, and industry trends. “We are pleased to collaborate with Standardbred Canada to conduct the economic impact study for the Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing breeds,” said Adrian Munro, President of CTHS. “The study will build off of the pre-pandemic era to begin tracking overall impact drivers for our industry.” “This is a first for both national breed registries who have agreed to work together to collect data and information on the horse racing sector in Canada and using the key performance metrics that the survey provides will help us understand and measure our lines of business with the ultimate goal of building a sustainable future for the industry,” said Dan Gall, President and CEO of Standardbred Canada. The final report will be reviewed by CTHS and the SC Board of Directors and is scheduled to be submitted in January 2023. This report will provide an overview of the evolution and current state of the Canadian horse racing industry and highlight the economic and social impacts of the sector, outline challenges, opportunities, and recommendations to consider. Bob Burden, a Senior Director with Serecon, added that “Our team will accurately assess the total contribution of the Canadian horse racing industry to Canada's economy so that both associations will be better equipped to address challenges going forward”. Both parties, SC and CTHS, encourage the horse racing sector to provide information into the research being conducted to allow our sector to be as thorough and accurate as possible with the data collected.
