FIRST HALF OF 2021 CTHS-BC SALES STAKES AT HASTINGS
HITS THE SPOTLIGHT ON BC HOLIDAY MONDAY

Vancouver, BC (August 1/21) – Veteran racing writer Randy Goulding suggested in the Daily Racing Form that Monday’s $50,000 CTHS-BC Sales Stakes in the fillies division at Hastings Racecourse “will likely serve as little more than a workout” for the four-time stakes winner Infinite Patience.

Goulding based his analysis on the fact only three horses have entered the 1 1/16-mile race for 3 & 4-year-old fillies. But while Infinite Patience trainer Barbara Heads might appreciate the prediction, rival trainers Dino Condilenios and Milton Palma will be thinking otherwise.

Three-year-olds Heidi (Condilenios) and Mi Reyna (Palma) are CTHS-BC Sales grads with respectable backgrounds.  Mi Reyna won the fillies division of the CTHS-BC Sales Stakes for 2-year-olds last year and Heidi has won twice in five starts this year.
Infinite Patience was named BC Horse of the Year and BC-Bred Horse of the Year in 2019 after winning as a 2-year-old the BC Cup Debutante, CTHS-BC Sales Stakes, Fantasy Stakes and Sadie Diamond Futurity for co-owners William DeCoursey and Burnaby-born NHL star with the Edmonton Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ R.N.H. Stable.

DeCoursey bred the filly who was bought at the 2018 Mixed Sale for $27,000 and has career earnings of $192,930.  She is the daughter of Sungold (A.P. Indy) from the mare Montero, by Louis Quatorze.  Sungold was named Champion Sire in 2019 and Champion Juvenile Sire while Montero was named Champion Broodmare
.
Infinite Patience is coming off a 7 ½-length win at Hastings in a $30,000 allowance race for fillies and mares on July 13.

CTHS-BC Director Dairen Edwards, a successful owner of CTHS-BC Sales grads over the years, will be Guest Decorator for the first of two CTHS-BC Sales Stakes races on the BC Holiday Monday card that starts at 5 p.m.

The $50,000 CTHS-BC Sales Stakes for 3 & 4-year-olds in the colts and geldings division is the second race Monday with a four-horse field going 1 1/16 miles. A couple of 4-year-olds – At Attention and Bold Arch – are destined to be co-favourites. Bred by Bryan and Carol Anderson and owned by Peter Redekop, At Attention has career earnings of $96,289 and is trained by Condilenios.  John and Kim Morrison and Robin Sadler own Bold Arch, bred by Barry Doud.  Guns N Ammo, bred by Sandra Loseth and owned by Willow Creek Farms join Pay My Way bred by Stoneview Farm and owned by Warren Wilson, Neil Stajkowski June Sutherland, Ross Switzer and Barry Hickman round out the field.

CTHS Director and noted breeder and owner Paul Caravetta will be Guest Decorator for the second CTHS-BC Sales Stakes on the seven-race card. It is possible he will be greeting fellow CTHS-BC Director Dairen Edwards in the winner’s circle with Edwards’ Willow Creek Farms owning Guns N Ammo.

YEARNING FOR A YEARLING?
THUNDERBIRD SHOW PARK IS THE PLACE TO BE SEPT. 14

Traditionally the CTHS-BC Sales Stakes involve four races on the same card but the two-year-old fillies and two-year-old colts and geldings races have been moved to Monday, August 30 to allow for more training time and provide them the opportunity to compete at Hastings as well as other racing venues in 2021.

The CTHS-BC Stales Stakes are customarily a forerunner to the annual CTHS-BC Yearling & Mixed Sale at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley.  This year’s Sale places the accent on the theme “It Now Pays More to Own a BC-Bred”.

BC-Breds will earn a 35% bonus on earnings at Hastings Racecourse from 2022 thru 2026. BC-Bred graduates of the 2021 and 2022 Yearling & Mixed Sales will earn a 50% bonus on earnings at Hastings between the 2022 and 2024 racing seasons.

At last count there are 88 entries listed for this year’s Sale compared to 78 total lots in 2020.  The leading 2020 Consignors were Emerald Acres, Wild Rose Farm, Bryan and Carol Anderson, Jamie Demetrick, Agent, Whitewood Farm, Agent and Mike Anderson, Agent.  The Leading Buyers were Peter Redekop BC, Ltd., Willow Creek Farms, Glen Todd, Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. and Rob Scott.

ASYOUBELIEVE EXPLODES IN THE STRETCH
TO WIN DEBUT IN CONVINCING FASHION

Popular Jack and Pat Bennett of Road’s End Farm in Abbotsford were in for a thrill on June 23 as they watched on television as two-year-old CTHS-BC Sales grad Asyoubelieve won his first start by 15 ½ lengths at Century Mile in a $16,500 maiden special weight at five furlongs. Bred by Jack Bennett and Paul Caravetta, Asyoubelieve is owned by Shot in the Dark Racing.

“I’ve been in the business for 30 years and with first-time starters you don’t know what you’re going to get,” Bennett says.  “He didn’t look comfortable when he started out but when he hit the stretch he exploded.”  Final time over the five furlongs was 59.00 flat.

Asyoubelieve, by Second in Command out of I Believe In by Cause to Believe, has a full brother in the 2021 Sale … Hip #69.

Another BC-bred successful debut was performed by U Did It, a filly by Teide out of Architecture by Dixie Chatter.  U Did It, bred by Christine Ammann and owned by John Anderson, romped to an 8 ¼-length win in a maiden optional claiming race at Hastings on July 20.  U Did It has a half-brother in the upcoming sale … Hip #43.

What better way to launch the 2023 thoroughbred racing season at Hastings Racecourse than to stage a full-blown dinner party just prior to opening day? First race to launch the 2023 schedule at Hastings is set for 2 p.m., Sunday, April 30. Four nights earlier – Wednesday, April 26 – the industry celebrates its 2022 BC Thoroughbred Awards Dinner and Hall of Fame Inductions at the Italian Cultural Centre. Horses from 16 categories will be acknowledged for their performances at Hastings last year. Co-ordinator Minna Rytkonen issued secret ballots to a panel of selectors in December. The winners will be revealed by emcees Dan Jukich and Mike Heads highlighting the April 26 event. Season-ending stats following last year’s 45-day racing calendar confirmed the 2022 leading breeder (Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds), owner (Rob and Sheena Maybin), trainer (Edgar Mendoza) and jockey (Amadeo Perez) awards. BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame 2022 inductees, announced earlier by curator Randy Goulding, are Dr. Ed Wiebe (builder), Richard Hamel (jockey) and Robbie Anderson (trainer). “After a two-year interruption staging the Awards Dinner due to the pandemic, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone again as a kick-off to the 2023 racing season,” says B-J Davidson, CTHS-BC Regional General Manager. “We consider it a huge family gathering.”

Standardbred Canada (SC) and the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) are pleased to announce the development of a National Economic Impact Study. The two organizations are working with Serecon, a third-party research company, to conduct an economic scan and facilitate key stakeholder interviews through a national survey and provide further analysis. The goals of the project are: To increase the understanding of the current state of the sector; To identify and articulate the economic and social impacts of horse racing across the country; To develop strategic recommendations to ensure the sustainability and inclusivity of the horse racing sector; Socialize findings with key federal government stakeholders The study will review such economic drivers as cost of ownership, economic contribution from horses, and industry trends. “We are pleased to collaborate with Standardbred Canada to conduct the economic impact study for the Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing breeds,” said Adrian Munro, President of CTHS. “The study will build off of the pre-pandemic era to begin tracking overall impact drivers for our industry.” “This is a first for both national breed registries who have agreed to work together to collect data and information on the horse racing sector in Canada and using the key performance metrics that the survey provides will help us understand and measure our lines of business with the ultimate goal of building a sustainable future for the industry,” said Dan Gall, President and CEO of Standardbred Canada. The final report will be reviewed by CTHS and the SC Board of Directors and is scheduled to be submitted in January 2023. This report will provide an overview of the evolution and current state of the Canadian horse racing industry and highlight the economic and social impacts of the sector, outline challenges, opportunities, and recommendations to consider. Bob Burden, a Senior Director with Serecon, added that “Our team will accurately assess the total contribution of the Canadian horse racing industry to Canada's economy so that both associations will be better equipped to address challenges going forward”. Both parties, SC and CTHS, encourage the horse racing sector to provide information into the research being conducted to allow our sector to be as thorough and accurate as possible with the data collected.
