With only a smattering of BC-bred winners to report this week, attention turns to the CTHS races scheduled for Sunday at Century Downs.

The respective heats of both the juvenile fillies’ and the colts’/geldings’ CTHS Sales Stakes races, to be run over seven furlongs, feature BC-bred runners with exceptional chances of success.

The Greg Tracy-trained filly QUINN ELLA (Stephanotis), who was bred by Brad Auger and Ron Bacon and is a graduate of the 2018 CTHS Alberta Yearling Sale, takes on just three rivals for the $50,000 purse.

Owned by Jodee Hoovestal and Ron Bacon, Quinn Ella has run just the twice so far this season, both times at Hastings. Last of nine on her Maiden Special Weight debut back in August, the youngster stepped up on that effort to take third behind ENCHANTED LADY (Langfuhr) the same month. She is currently a 3-1 shot behind the short-priced favourite, and stablemate, PEARL OF KNOWLEDGE (Cape Canaveral).

Seven geldings go to post for the boys’ leg of the CTHS Sales Stakes, with Peter Redekop’s two-time winner ABOVE THE MOON (Harbor the Gold) looking to do the CTHS Sales Stakes double after he successfully landed the spoils at Hastings back in August.

Trained by Phil Hall, the homebred Above the Moon graduated through the CTHS BC Yearling and Mixed Sale last year and, following two wins and a third from four starts, is a warm morning line favourite to notch another high-profile win for BC-breds in Alberta.

The eight BC-bred winners this past week featured another two for the pensioned stallion, CAUSE TO BELIEVE (Maria’s Mon), who continues to get winners on an almost weekly basis. Like Above the Moon, Cause to Believe raced for Peter Redekop (he was an Ocala breeze-up purchase), before eventually going on to sire a host of winners including, of course, Above the Moon’s half-brother, EUROPEAN.

Good luck to all the connections of BC-bred runners this coming weekend and congratulations to everyone connected with last week’s winners.

Not Bourbon (Not Impossible – Bourbon Belle) passed away on December 28, 2025, at the age of 20. Bred and owned by Charles Fipke and trained by Roger Attfield, Not Bourbon was an exceptional racehorse whose accomplishments earned him a place in Canadian racing history. During his career on the track, Not Bourbon captured some of the nation’s most prestigious races, including the Queen’s Plate, Plate Trial, Queenston Stakes, and Overskate Stakes. As a two-year-old, he showed early promise by winning the Bull Page Stakes and setting a track record for six furlongs at Woodbine. Over the course of three racing seasons, Not Bourbon earned more than one million dollars, and his outstanding three-year-old campaign was recognized with a Sovereign Award. Retired to stud, Not Bourbon went on to become a champion sire in Ontario, further cementing his legacy in the breeding shed. In 2020, he relocated to British Columbia, standing his first season at Emerald Acres in Aldergrove, before moving to Flying Horse Farm in West Kelowna, where he continued to make a meaningful contribution to the provincial breeding industry. Not Bourbon will be remembered for his talent as a racehorse and his contributions to breeding in both Ontario and British Columbia.
