After the highs of BC Derby week and the CTHS Yearling & Mixed Sale, it was more mundane fare on the racetracks of our region this past week, although that did not stop BC-bred runners from racking up the winners.

There were 11 BC-bred winners over the past week or so and, remarkably, STORM VICTORY (Storm Cat) sired four of them.

A resident of Klimes Farm near Kelowna, Storm Victory continues to be well represented by winners on a almost weekly basis, despite slowing down quite noticeably in terms of mare numbers over the past few seasons.

Barely a week passes without the son of Storm Cat, who was unraced but is from an impeccable family, having a winner or two and it’s frustrating that he appears to have struggled to get the numbers of mares some of his less accomplished rivals seem to attract.

Head of the quartet was undoubtedly the Pat Jarvis-trained DORYS DARLIN, who landed a competitive-looking $16,000 claimer at Hastings by a neck from the speedy KRISSY (Pop Artist), with the useful LOOKOUT TAYLOR (Gayego) back in third.

Anecdotally, sons and daughters of Storm Victory can be a little “hot”, and that is certainly the case with Dorys Darlin. However, once the athletic-looking filly breaks from the gate, she’s all business – as her two wins, two seconds and two thirds from ten starts illustrate.

Other BC-bred highlights from last week included a maiden victory for BACKTOHERTRICKS, whose Canterbury Park victory was a third individual winner for Stone Ridge Farms’ freshman sire, BAKKEN. The battle between the son of Distorted Humor and local rival LENT (Pulpit) looks certain to provide breeding enthusiasts with lots of fun between now and the end of the year.

Congratulations to all the winning breeders this past week, and don’t forget to let us know if you spot a BC-bred winner somewhere that we may have missed.

Not Bourbon (Not Impossible – Bourbon Belle) passed away on December 28, 2025, at the age of 20. Bred and owned by Charles Fipke and trained by Roger Attfield, Not Bourbon was an exceptional racehorse whose accomplishments earned him a place in Canadian racing history. During his career on the track, Not Bourbon captured some of the nation’s most prestigious races, including the Queen’s Plate, Plate Trial, Queenston Stakes, and Overskate Stakes. As a two-year-old, he showed early promise by winning the Bull Page Stakes and setting a track record for six furlongs at Woodbine. Over the course of three racing seasons, Not Bourbon earned more than one million dollars, and his outstanding three-year-old campaign was recognized with a Sovereign Award. Retired to stud, Not Bourbon went on to become a champion sire in Ontario, further cementing his legacy in the breeding shed. In 2020, he relocated to British Columbia, standing his first season at Emerald Acres in Aldergrove, before moving to Flying Horse Farm in West Kelowna, where he continued to make a meaningful contribution to the provincial breeding industry. Not Bourbon will be remembered for his talent as a racehorse and his contributions to breeding in both Ontario and British Columbia.
