Friday evening at Hastings Racecourse, Vancouver, BC highlighted by 4 stakes races for graduates of Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society sales in Western Canada.

Cypress Park Shows her Stuff

In the first race at Hastings, the CTHS Sales Stake for 3 and 4-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles the field was short on numbers but high in quality. The three-year-old filly, Cypress Park , turned the tables on the two older more experienced and accomplished competitors. Under rider Enrique Gonzalez she slowly pulled herself to the lead, maintained that position and saved enough for the stretch to hold her fellow female friends safe by 1 1/4 lengths. BC-bred Cypress Park is trained by Anita Bolton and owned by Nick and Pauline Felicella, and was bred by White House Stables. Cypress Park is by Second in Command and out of the excellent Regal Remark mare, Mascaretta. Mascaretta has produced multiple stakes winners including Cypress Park's full sister Hollywood Miss, as well as $400,000 plus earner and champion, Ookashada. Cypress Park was sold to the Felicellas at the 2016 CTHS Yearling & Mixed Thoroughbred Sale for the bargain price of $25,000.

Notice Picks Our Head Up

In the second race, the CTHS Sales Stake for 2-year-old fillies going 6 1/2 furlongs, a field of seven horses lined up to take their best shot. The BC-bred filly, Notice, popped out of the gate, made all her steps winning ones and was 4 1/2 lengths clear of her nearest foe at the wire. She was guided to victory by jockey Aaron Gryder, who was just getting started on what would be a very good day. Notice is owned by longtime BC horseman Ole Nielsen, and was bred by Canmor Farms, she is by their now deceased, accomplished sire, Stephanotis. Good news for Mr. Ole Nielsen, as the BC bred winner of this stakes race earns the owner a $10,000 bonus and the breeder a $2,500 bonus, both which now come his way. Notice is out of the broodmare, Ansede who has produced two full siblings, Act Up and Annotis, both winners. Notice went through the 2017 BC CTHS Sale as Hip #14, but was RNA (Reserve Not Attained, ie. not sold) at $4,500. Canmor Farms has consigned a bay filly, out of Ansede, by Devil in Disguise, Hip #3, to the September 11th BC CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sale at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC. Have a look, sometimes good ones early in the sale don't get the attention they deserve.

Call It a Wrap Rolls Home

In the third race at Hastings Racecourse, a group of eight contested the CTHS Sales Stake for 2-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs. BC-bred Call It a Wrap , breaking from the outside post, was allowed to relax for a half mile, landing him briefly in last place before rider Aaron Gryder gave him the signal and he circled the field to win by a length going away. The 2-year-old chestnut gelding Call It a Wrap is owned by Riversedge Racing Stables, Ltd., bred by Robert Charles Ferguson and Nina Christine Ferguson and was trained to victory by Craig MacPherson. How about this, since the winner of this stakes race is a BC-bred, the owner, Riversedge receives a $10,000 bonus and the breeders, the Fergusons, a $2,500 bonus, talk about return on investment. Call It A Wrap is by BC sire Finality and out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare, After the Rain. Riversedge Racing purchased Call It a Wrap from the 2017 CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sale for a mere $6,000. Your dream horse may be waiting for you at the upcoming BC CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sale, September 11th at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC.

Strate Remark Tells No Lies

The fourth race at Hastings Racecourse brought us the CTHS Sales Stake for 3 and 4-year-olds colts and geldings to go 1 1/16 miles. The 4-year-old BC-bred chestnut gelding Strate Remark ran to his odds, going wire to wire before hitting the finish line 3/4 of a length clear of his nearest rival under red hot rider Aaron Gryder. Aaron went on to win 5 out of 6 races on the day. Strate Remark is trained by Craig MacPherson and owned by Riversedge Racing Stables, Ltd. who purchased him out of the 2015 BC CTHS Sale for $35,000. Strate Remark was bred by long-time quality breeders, Red Rock Farm, he is by interior BC sire Sungold and out of the outstanding producer, Remarkable Gal, dam of multiple stakes winners and stakes placed winners. She has produced progeny which has a amassed earnings of well over $1,000,000. Most of that money was earned by her best son, the racing warrior, Trick of the North.

What better way to launch the 2023 thoroughbred racing season at Hastings Racecourse than to stage a full-blown dinner party just prior to opening day? First race to launch the 2023 schedule at Hastings is set for 2 p.m., Sunday, April 30. Four nights earlier – Wednesday, April 26 – the industry celebrates its 2022 BC Thoroughbred Awards Dinner and Hall of Fame Inductions at the Italian Cultural Centre. Horses from 16 categories will be acknowledged for their performances at Hastings last year. Co-ordinator Minna Rytkonen issued secret ballots to a panel of selectors in December. The winners will be revealed by emcees Dan Jukich and Mike Heads highlighting the April 26 event. Season-ending stats following last year’s 45-day racing calendar confirmed the 2022 leading breeder (Tod Mountain Thoroughbreds), owner (Rob and Sheena Maybin), trainer (Edgar Mendoza) and jockey (Amadeo Perez) awards. BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame 2022 inductees, announced earlier by curator Randy Goulding, are Dr. Ed Wiebe (builder), Richard Hamel (jockey) and Robbie Anderson (trainer). “After a two-year interruption staging the Awards Dinner due to the pandemic, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone again as a kick-off to the 2023 racing season,” says B-J Davidson, CTHS-BC Regional General Manager. “We consider it a huge family gathering.”

Standardbred Canada (SC) and the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) are pleased to announce the development of a National Economic Impact Study. The two organizations are working with Serecon, a third-party research company, to conduct an economic scan and facilitate key stakeholder interviews through a national survey and provide further analysis. The goals of the project are: To increase the understanding of the current state of the sector; To identify and articulate the economic and social impacts of horse racing across the country; To develop strategic recommendations to ensure the sustainability and inclusivity of the horse racing sector; Socialize findings with key federal government stakeholders The study will review such economic drivers as cost of ownership, economic contribution from horses, and industry trends. “We are pleased to collaborate with Standardbred Canada to conduct the economic impact study for the Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing breeds,” said Adrian Munro, President of CTHS. “The study will build off of the pre-pandemic era to begin tracking overall impact drivers for our industry.” “This is a first for both national breed registries who have agreed to work together to collect data and information on the horse racing sector in Canada and using the key performance metrics that the survey provides will help us understand and measure our lines of business with the ultimate goal of building a sustainable future for the industry,” said Dan Gall, President and CEO of Standardbred Canada. The final report will be reviewed by CTHS and the SC Board of Directors and is scheduled to be submitted in January 2023. This report will provide an overview of the evolution and current state of the Canadian horse racing industry and highlight the economic and social impacts of the sector, outline challenges, opportunities, and recommendations to consider. Bob Burden, a Senior Director with Serecon, added that “Our team will accurately assess the total contribution of the Canadian horse racing industry to Canada's economy so that both associations will be better equipped to address challenges going forward”. Both parties, SC and CTHS, encourage the horse racing sector to provide information into the research being conducted to allow our sector to be as thorough and accurate as possible with the data collected.
