The following communication is on behalf of the B.C. Horse Racing Industry Management Committee and chairman Douglas S. Scott:

The Horse Racing Industry Management Committee congratulates Great Canadian Gaming Corp. and the City of Vancouver for the two-year renewal of the operating agreement for Hastings Racecourse announced today.

The Committee feels the renewal is a positive development for the future of horse racing in B.C. It provides much-needed certainty for thoroughbred racing in Vancouver in the short term and it means the industry can now focus on the development of our future plan to secure a vibrant and sustainable industry for decades to come.

A preliminary report from the Committee is expected to be released within a few months and further consultations with the industry will follow. Any changes adopted for the structure and operation of the industry within British Columbia will take some time to implement and the two-year renewal for Hastings fits well with the Committee’s timeframe for that transition.
